Sustainability in the digital age is one of the most seen articles in digital transformation field.
With in the EU, sustainability is one of the most repeated concepts and perhaps, the fifth industrial revolution rooted in sustainability(and agility).
Developed countries has paid a lot of attention to alignment of organization and enviroment and this issue goes far beyond the slogans on the wall of the organization.
George and Schillebeeckx (2022), identified 3 factors that increase organizational tensions.
– Pandemic
– Environmental crises
– Digitization
The common point that can be seen for the discussion of digital transformation and sustainability is the common view of large organizations on these two as a cause of tension; In the sense that both of them will have the ability to affect businesses. This is where the necessity of having a sense of urgency in the organization and increasing knowledge in these areas is necessary in order to make complementary use of one for the other.
Obviously, just like an organizational maturity, development of organizational sustainability policies, will face a failure if digital challenges are neglected.
The reason is, sustainability in business requires proper infrastructure and processes. moreover, a mission and a vision that fits the digital age is required.
The connection point of digital transformation and sustainability is also seen in digital maturity models; the DMM model for example,
the Net Carbon Footprint index is developed with the same approach.
It seems that as organizations become familiar with the dimensions of digital transformation, they adjust this phenomenon inorder to achieve sustainability goals. on the other hand, sustainability strategies will not go anywhere without the use of digital technologies.
